ACME® Economy Black Smoke Purifier: Features and Usage Guidelines

The ACME® economy-model black smoke purifier for diesel generator sets, designed and manufactured by Hanlan, is primarily used to purify black-smoke particulate matter (PM) in diesel generator exhaust. It is especially suitable for diesel-powered electrical equipment and operating scenarios with low usage frequency or short working hours.

It can be supplied with new units or used to retrofit the exhaust systems of existing units, and it can be combined with other exhaust purification units produced by Hanlan—such as ACME® series DOC three-way catalytic converters and SCR flue-gas denitrification systems—to achieve multi-pollutant control.

When the generator’s exhaust enters the black smoke purifier, it passes into the DPF (diesel particulate filter) element through the inlet, then flows through the wall-flow channels to the outlet passages and exits. As the exhaust passes through the porous channel walls, soot particulates are captured within or on the surface of the walls, thereby removing black-smoke PM from the exhaust.

ACME® Economy Black Smoke Purifier: Features and Usage Guidelines

The ACME® economy-model black smoke purifier uses manual ash-cleaning regeneration, offering low cost, high temperature and corrosion resistance, long service life, and high purification efficiency. The black-smoke (PM) removal rate is approximately 90%, with a Ringelmann Index ≤ 1. The purifier is installed downstream of the silencer (and can replace the original second-stage silencer), can be fixed using brackets or suspended by hoisting, and is connected to the exhaust piping. During hoisting, handle with care and avoid impacts. Before installation, store the unit in a dry, well-ventilated warehouse free from corrosive media, protected from rain, snow, and severe vibration. Raise the base at least 150 mm to prevent moisture. Keep flammable materials away from the purifier, and ensure adequate indoor ventilation.

Before use, check that the purifier and power leads are intact and correctly connected; for example, do not reverse the power supply’s positive and negative terminals, or the unit will not operate. During use, maintain and service the purifier regularly: inspect operating status, check for any looseness of the housing, and have personnel monitor generator backpressure. Take timely action based on backpressure prompts or clean the DPF element as needed to ensure safe, stable operation.

ACME® Economy Black Smoke Purifier: Features and Usage Guidelines

After a period of operation—especially once the DPF loading reaches a certain level—generator backpressure will gradually rise. When the soot accumulation in the filter approaches or reaches the upper limit, the DPF must be cleaned (i.e., the filter regenerated). Stop the generator set, allow the purifier to cool, remove the side cover plate, loosen the clamping bolts on the mounting flange, and take out the DPF filter element. Using high-pressure air, blow out the accumulated soot in the reverse exhaust-flow direction. After the DPF is blown clean, reinstall it into the exhaust purifier. If the generator operates under poor conditions—such as incomplete combustion of diesel fuel—or if engine oil is used as fuel, the DPF surface may be oil-fouled. In that case, reverse-blowing with compressed air alone will be ineffective; first burn off the oil using a blowtorch or other method, then blow clean with compressed air.

Note: The surface temperature of the black smoke purifier is very high during operation. Keep flammable materials away, and do not touch the unit directly to avoid burns.
